On April 23, Centro Español de Queens celebrated its first edition of the traditional “Feria de Abril” which takes place each year in Seville, Spain during the month of April and focuses on the wonderful cuisine, music and dance of the Andalucia region.  This event represents one of the many cultural events that the organization will host to promote the various traditions of Spain which vary from region to region.  Stay tuned for more information about another event coming soon on June 23, which will celebrate the Feast of San Juan with celtic music and a traditional “queimada” from the Galician region of Spain (a.k.a. spanish moonshine).

At the April Festival, guests had the opportunity to taste various Spanish wines and food thanks to the many purveyors who participated and supported our event.  Thanks to Despaña Brand Foods, Dulcinea Sweets, Classic Wines, Spain Wine Collections, Soberon Wines, Vinaio Imports and Chispa Wines for coming with their favorite options for people to taste and enjoy.

Doors opened at 4pm so guests could visit all the tables and try the various food and wine options.  Circulo Espanol offered a wonderful buffet which included spanish tortilla, empanada, paella and callos – a traditional stew dish.  Despaña Brand also offered tapas of spanish chorizo, cheeses and olives.  Of course the food and wine was amazing, but we could not host this festival without showcasing the wonderful music and dance that comes from the south of Spain in the Andalucia region.  Sonia Olla and Ismael Fernandez Flamenco Company kicked off the performances with an authentic tablao show called Al Son Son.  The performers were their advanced students who have worked with them for years and who danced to Ismael’s amazing singing and the wonderful guiter playing of Hector Marquez.  Sonia helped close out the performance herself with her incredible and world renown Flamenco dance.  Following the Flamenco show we had the incredible Cintron Brothers, which provided a mix of Latin and Flamenco music as they sang some of the most famous Gypsy King songs.  The crowd was so enthused they cleared the tables away to make room for some dancing of their own!

We want to thank all of the guests who attended and who helped make this first edition of the “Feria de Abril” a true success.  Next year’s edition will be even better!
